Beyond the Bushfires

Community support and resources for those affected by the 2009 bushfires

In preparation for the 10th Anniversary of the 2009 Bushfires, the Victorian Government has provided additional funding to increase mental health and health support, through existing services, for bushfire-affected communities and first responders. The Australian Primary Mental Health Alliance is one of a number of organisations funded to deliver this support, which includes individual psychological support, community engagement activities, and resources.

Check out our webpage for further information about planned commemorative events or to download resources to support you through this period.

Common reactions to an anniversary

Natural disasters (such as bushfires, floods, storms and drought) are extremely challenging for people who are directly (or indirectly) affected. These challenges and associated symptoms can re-emerge during anniversaries, like an annual echo, catching even the most well-prepared people off-guard. It is important to remember that while anniversary reactions can be emotionally taxing and truly distressing, it can also provide an opportunity for ongoing emotional healing. Recognising, acknowledging and paying attention to the feelings and issues that surface during this period, can help a person develop strategies to reduce the emotional impact being experienced.
